The job search

Your second assignment is to write a letter of application and resume for a specific job that you will have to find and research. Preliminarily, you must assess your strengths and weaknesses and decide how they match your chosen professional field.

Thus, ASAP please briefly answer the following questions about yourself by responding to this post:

1. What are the specific needs of the job I am applying for? What is the "corporate culture" of the company I am applying to? (You'll have to pick a job and research the company.)

2. Am I right for the job at hand? Do I satisfy the their needs? Am I the right person for their corporate culture? (Notice that the questions do NOT ask whether the job is right for you. That question is irrelevant to the people who will make decisions about you.) What are my strengths and weaknesses with regard to the search for a job? In other words, what do I know, what do I know how to do, and what do I need to learn and learn to do before I leave old OWU.

The questions are somewhat personal, but you'll gain some benefit from seeing how others respond. Feel free to go back and edit your answers once you have seen what others have to say.

Remember, the questions are designed to help you in the job search. I won't be grading the grammar or content (unless I see a distinct lack of effort or no post at all).

Have fun. Think hard. Treat the letter/ resume assignment like the real thing because it IS the real thing.

  1. The job I am looking at is the personnel manager at the pool of Burning Tree Country Club in Greenwich, CT.

    Responses:
    1.
-Specific needs: Certified in Lifeguarding/Waterfront/CPR/AED/First Aid through the American Red Cross, clear communicator, organized, personable, responsible, creative, office savvy, punctual

-Corporate Culture: The corporate aspect of this job is outside of the pool is in the country club atmosphere. Meetings mean representing myself and my pool staff, but most importantly, Burning Tree Country Club, by being well-dressed and groomed at all times, in the club atmosphere and outside. [Pool culture: relaxed atmosphere, but still maintaining structure and authority

    2.
I have worked for Burning Tree Country Club for the past two summers already. I have upheld a great relationship with my fellow staff members at the pool, as well snack bar and camp staff. Due to my background of a summer camp environment, I have made a concerted effort the past two summers to get to know as many of the membership's families as I can to expect what they need. The job description requires someone who needs to balance both the staff and the membership. The need to communicate clearly, properly, and appropriately with all pool other aspects of the pool atmosphere, the day camp, the snack bar, and the coaching staff, is crucial so that every member of the BTCC staff knows what to expect every day. As far as the corporate culture is concerned, I understand how to present myself, my staff, and my employer at all times. I am the representative of a prestigious company at the clubhouse, the pool, the staff housing, and out in the community.

    3.
What do I know- I know my Lifeguarding skills and I know how the structure of the pool previously was structured, and how it has failed for the past two years.
What do I know how to do- I know how to execute my certified skills to demonstrate and to perform a save. I know how to separate my personal and work life. Most importantly, I understand how to "manage down" and not come off as someone who is arrogant, patronizing, and inconsiderate.
What do I need to learn- I think it would be beneficial to become certified in teaching swimming and being a pool operations manager. These can be accomplished with the help from Whitney Snow, assistant swim team coach, and OWU alumnus, who first certified me in May 2008 for Lifeguarding.

  2. THe Job I will be applying for is the US Marshals Service
    1.
    Specific Needs--
Be a US Citizen, drivers license, excellent physical condition, complete a structured interview and background check and undergo a 17 week basic training camp. Also a four year bachelors degree is required or at least 3 years of law enforcement experience.

    -Corporate Culture-
The US Marshals deal with judicial security, witness protection, investigative operations, fugitive location, and tactical operations.

    2.
This job will require me to work on my own stressful situations as well as team based operations. Marshals also have to be able to deal with people in a professional manner ranging from associates to prisoners. Marshals also have to be able to proficiently make arrests and use a firearm.

    3.
As of right now I would meet most of the employment needs by the Marshals, except for completing my undergraduate degree. I am also in good terms with a DEA agent that would be able to write a letter of recommendation for me.
I think my firearms training and martial arts training will give me an edge in the basic training phase of my career and put me ahead of other people. I also know that I need to be in superior physical condition to excel at being a Marshal

  3. The job I'll be applying for is a customer relations and promotion job at Toyota.
    1-
Specific needs= good people skills and communication skills. Pass the background and drug tests. Have good networking skills and a good personality. Also, you should be a good speaker and feel comfortable speaking with strangers.
Corporate Culture= Toyota has a relatively laid back friendly atmosphere. Business/casual attire is worn but the atmosphere is very relaxed.

    2-
I feel I'm very fitting for the job. I worked at Toyota through the summer for the past two summers. During the summers I networked and meet many people high up in the Toyota corporation. I aquired good networking abilities while I was at Toyota and gained a reputation for being a hard working and getting the job done well. 4. I am applying for a job as a middle school teacher at the Delaware City Schools.

    1. Teacher candidates in Delaware need to have completed student teaching, received a bachelor's degree and passed all relevant Praxis exams. Delaware teachers must dress and act professionally to provide a good example to students and present a positive image to parents and other members of the community.

    2. I am a solid candidate for the job at hand because as an Ohio Wesleyan education student, I have received excellent training and have done three field experiences (so far) in Delaware schools (both Dempsey and Willis). Because of these field experiences I understand how the district functions, how to fit in with the other employees, and what kinds of issues the students are dealing with. I have not yet done my student teaching, but that will be completed in the spring. I have passed the first of the three Praxis exams that must be completed, and am currently in the classes that will prepare me for the other two.

  5. -The job I will be applying for is a position in the Community Relations Department for the professional soccer team, D.C United.

    1. The specific needs required for this job are that I must be a self-starter, and independent worker, trustworthy, and have sufficient ability in verbal and written communication. For this job I will be answering player and team fan mail, coordinating several community service programs, and facilitating many charity programs. The corporate culture of this company is to represent the entire organization and maintain a strong relationship with the city of Washington, D.C. Therefore, not only is it important to represent yourself well to the company and the team, but more importantly to have a good relationship with the fans and the area, because without fans and a cooperating city, then there would be no team. Since the job offers a variety of different aspects it is important to be able to adapt to each one and be ready to work everyday.

    2. I believe that I am right for this job because I am very familiar with the organization and how it works. I have lived in D.C my whole life and have participated in many of the various services that will be required of me to complete for this job. Furthermore, I play soccer here at OWU and I understand the game and the work that it takes for an organization to be successful. Since I am from the area I am also familiar with the associated charities and I have even volunteered for one of them. I am also a journalism major with a concentration in English so I feel that my writing ability is adequate for this position and I can meet all of my deadlines. One area in which I need to improve is my verbal ability. I am very comfortable in conversations and simple communication. However, sometimes I feel a little uncomfortable speaking in front of large groups of people. I know that this job includes various community outreach activities that I feel comfortable doing, but just in case I need to speak in front of a large group of people I want to be ready. Therefore, I could possibly take some kind of public speaking class before I leave OWU.

  6. The job I’ll be applying for is the assistant editor of the GW magazine.
    1) George Washington University is looking for an assistant editor to write and copy edit for the alumni magazine. They will be looking for a bachelor’s degree in a related area, typically Journalism, English, or Communications and will want some experience to back up their alumni magazine. The corporate culture is at a college in the United States so it is more laid back then IBM, but will require you to be presentable because you are representing the school.
    2) GW wants 3 years experience which I can have. At OWU, I have been a reporter for the Transcript, and work as Business Manager for the Transcript dealing with advertising sales of the newspaper. In the summer of 2009, I interned at NYLON, a fashion magazine for the editor in chief and dealt primarily with the online version of the magazine. This summer, I interned at Citeron-Wolf Publishing and did a primarily editorial internship on written publications for parenting magazines, the ryder cup, and the world equestrian games. Now at school, I have an internship with the office of public relations and communications where I will be writing press releases for connect OWU and in the spring for the OWU magazine. I have the internship experience, but they may not consider me qualified because it is only internships, and not a real job.

  7. I plan to actually apply to a research position at a medical school next summer. I may attend Ohio University College of Osteopathic medicine next year so I will apply for a position in research at a lab with Dr. Kelly McCall.

    1) A summer research position requires the ability to understand and have an interest in the research subject, to be able to follow orders and directions, and to be able to clearly present data and information. The environment is relaxed and casual with presentations of data given between labs every Wednesday. Different lab groups work together closely and researchers must be able to work with others well.

2)I have performed research both as a volunteer and as a paid position over the past two summers. I have worked in the lab with Dr. McCall in the past and was able to keep the area clean and organized and finish protocols in a timely manner with little additional supervision or instruction. As a Biochemistry major I am familiar with topics in both Chemistry and Molecular Biology and as a Premedical student wanting to become an Endocrinologist I am familiar with the needs for Diabetes research and have a genuine interest in this topic (the field of study for this lab). During SSRP this summer I was the sole researcher for the lab I was in so I was responsible for carrying out all protocols throughout the summer. I performed presentations of the material to other labs as I would at OUCOM.

  10. I am applying for an English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) through the Fulbright program.

    1) ETA's teach English abroad in communities that are usually away from the capital cities of the host country. ETA's are expected to be a part of the host community and to give their students insight into the United States as well as to improve their students' language skills.

    2) As an English major, with minors in Education and Spanish, my educational background has provided me with a great deal that would be beneficial in this position. I have strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to communicate at least conversationally in another language. I have taken classes in educational theory, psychology, and methodology, through which I have also planned and implemented lessons. I have experience working in schools and will be in the field this semester, as well as student teaching in the spring. Through extracurricular experiences, I have been in leadership positions on campus, including serving as a mission trip leader in which I planned and organized a week-long mission trip to El Salvador. While there, I had the opportunity to plan and then co-teach an English lesson in a local school. I have also tutored in English and Spanish at both the elementary and high school levels.

  13. I am applying for a job at an Elementary, Intermediate 4-6 grade school in Dayton, OH

    1. Teachers must use a variety of instructional methods and curriculum materials in instrucing the students. They will work as a team member and will administer different forms of student assessments. Teachers are also expected to communicate with parents and other team members about student progress, and plan for further instruction. Teachers must also pass all relevant Praxis exams and receive a bachelor's degree after completing their student teaching. They must be able to work with fellow teachers and make the lesson plans.

    2. As an Ohio Wesleyan education major, I have had a variety of different experiences both in and out of the classroom through working with different instructional methods. I have had three field expereinces two of which were in an intermediate school. One of those field experiences was specifically in a fifth grade classroom. I have had the oportunity to observe the communication needed in teaching teams, and have worked in small groups in my education classes to also gain experience in working with other educators in building lesson plans and units that tie multiple subjects together. My educational classes constructed interthematic units as well as other forms of differentiated instruction. I will have no problem in working with other teachers and making a variety of different lesson plans to enrich the learning of my students. Even though I have only passed the first of three Praxis exams I am in the final courses in my education major and will be taking the final two after finishing those classes.

  14. I plan on working part time next year while I get my masters in public administration and eventually plan on applying for the state budget or planning office or applying to Huntington or Chase Banks.

    1. The specific needs of this job require being organized and have a great understanding of the world, U.S., and Ohio economies. Also being aware of current events and being able to apply those concepts to microeconomic theories. I am not sure of everything until I've completed my degrees, however; being interested and intelligent is the largest pre-requisite. I am not sure about the culture of the "company" but I do know it is very professional and promotes within. It is also very opening to hiring young workers and is constantly looking for new talent.
    2. I feel as though I would be perfect for these industries. I have not researched which jobs are available, but I plan on completing my knowledge of this information while finishing my masters degree. Ohio Wesleyan has prepared me greatly for the business aspect of life, and I could apply for Huntington at an entry level position right away. The PA degree is made for a different set of knowledge that builds upon the business bachelors degree; something I would have to review later. I would of course take the GMAT and/or GRE and hopefully, upon having good test scores, could show my abilities to work in the field of public administration or banking.

My weaknesses are tied into recruiting because that is not a part of the high school level.

  16. I haven't really thought about a specific job at a specifice place. I have, however, thought about working in a marketing department for a baseball team somewhere. I find this type of work very fascinating and closely related to what I like to do. Baseball has always been a dream for me, and just to be around it would make it worth my while.
    1. The specific needs of the job I am applying for are a strong understanding of how the market works regarding baseball and publicizing it. The techniques used will be vital people know exactly what they want when they watch baseball. I would like to one day be in the front office of a major league team, which comes down to more than just education and being qualified. I fit the corporate culture very well. I have played this game for 15 years now and have met a lot of important people along the way. I know the business side, as well as the playing side when it come to this particular field. I've always had the dream of being the general manager of a professional team one day. It is possible. My dad went to high school with Jim Bowden, former Reds and Nationals GM.
    2. I am right for the job at hand. I am very young still and am inexperienced when it comes to the ways of how things work at the professional level, but this is what I love to do and I have a very high baseball IQ and have taken the required courses to put myself in a position to be a GM for a team. It is going to take some time and a lot of working my way up to get to this dream job, but i am prepared and determined to accomplish my dream of one day being a GM. I need to finish out my college career here at OWU and start looking for internships at front offices of teams all over the U.S. I need to apply now so that I have somewhere to go and get hands on experience right after college. My strengths are that this is a field I have a very good understanding of. My weaknesses are that I have never worked in an office setting and that my GPA doesn't jump off the page when they see it, but I assure you that I am very knowledgable when it comes to this particular subject.
